Leaders Eat Last
I learned early on in my Army career there was more to leading than holding a title. Soldiers can tell whether their leader is more into being the commander than commanding. The former is often apparent at gatherings where the leader makes an obligatory appearance and moves to the head of the line presumably because their time is more important than those in their charge. They are oblivious to the inappropriateness. The latter will wait or forgo all together whatever is being provided in order to spend time and interact with their Soldiers. While Simon Sinek may have written a book on it, leaders eat last has long been a part of military leadership.
Too often we elect who we believe are leaders to be our representatives, only to find that they are more concerned with being the representative than representing. They are oblivious to everything except money, power, self promotion, scoring political points, and pleasing special interest groups. They are anything but public servants.
My pledge is that I will work for you. I will listen to you. I will represent you. I will work tirelessly to make our community better for everyone and make Thomaston and Upson County a place where everyone is proud to live, play, work and call home.
